Installing an eSIM on an iPhone takes less than two minutes. Here's the complete step-by-step process for all supported models (iPhone XS and later).
Before You Start
- Your iPhone must be unlocked (not carrier-locked)
- You need an active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection
- Have your eSIM QR code ready (from SIMPal or your carrier)
- Make sure your iOS is up to date
Method 1: Scan a QR Code (Most Common)
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap Mobile Data (or "Cellular" in some regions)
- Tap Add eSIM
- Tap Use QR Code
- Point your camera at the QR code provided by SIMPal or your carrier
- Tap Continue on the confirmation screen
- Choose a label for the eSIM (e.g. "Travel — Japan") and tap Continue
- Choose your default line for calls, texts, and data, then tap Done
Method 2: Enter Details Manually
If you can't scan the QR code, tap Enter Details Manually after step 3 and type in the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code provided by your carrier.
Method 3: iPhone 14+ (eSIM Transfer / Direct Setup)
iPhone 14 and later in the US are eSIM-only. When setting up a new device, iOS will offer to transfer your eSIM from your previous iPhone automatically if both phones are nearby.
After Installation: Set Your Default Lines
With dual SIM enabled you'll be asked which line to use for:
- Default line for calls and texts (usually your home SIM)
- Mobile data (select your travel eSIM for local rates)
- iMessage and FaceTime
You can change these any time in Settings → Mobile Data.
Troubleshooting
If activation fails, ensure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and that the QR code hasn't been used before. Each SIMPal QR code is single-use. Contact SIMPal support in-app if the issue persists.
