Dual SIM with eSIM is one of the most practical features for travellers. You keep your home number active for calls and texts while a local eSIM handles your data — no roaming charges, no missed calls.
How Dual SIM Works
Most modern smartphones have one physical SIM slot and one embedded eSIM. Both can be active simultaneously. You assign each line a role:
- Home SIM: Calls, SMS, and your regular number
- Travel eSIM: Mobile data at local rates
Incoming calls to your home number ring normally. Data runs through the local eSIM. You get the best of both without paying roaming rates.
Setting Up Dual SIM on iPhone
- Install your travel eSIM (Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM)
- Go to Settings → Mobile Data
- Set Default Voice Line to your physical SIM (home number)
- Set Mobile Data to your eSIM (travel plan)
- Enable Allow Mobile Data Switching so calls can fall back to the data line if needed
Setting Up Dual SIM on Android (Samsung)
- Install your travel eSIM (Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan)
- Go to Settings → Connections → SIM card manager
- Set Calls to your physical SIM
- Set Mobile data to your eSIM
- Enable Auto data switching if available
Setting Up Dual SIM on Pixel
- Install your travel eSIM (Settings → Network → SIMs → Add SIM)
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
- Tap each SIM to assign its role for calls and data
Tips for Getting It Right
- Label your SIMs clearly — name them "Home" and the destination (e.g. "Japan Data") to avoid confusion
- Check your voicemail — it's tied to your home SIM; make sure it's set up before you leave
- Disable data roaming on your home SIM — go to your home SIM settings and turn off data roaming so it never accidentally uses expensive roaming data
- iMessage/WhatsApp — link these to your home number, not the eSIM, so contacts can reach you normally
What If My Phone Only Has One SIM Slot?
If your device has a physical SIM tray with one slot and an eSIM, you can still use both. If it has two physical SIM slots but no eSIM, you'll need to choose between your home SIM and a local SIM — this is where eSIM-capable devices have a clear advantage.
